💧🍓 Watering Strawberries — How I Do It Right in the Rooftop Garden

by | Aug 4, 2025 | Uncategorized

Watering strawberries in pots sounds easy —And here’s what I’ve learned:

When I first started growing strawberries in pots, I didn’t realize just how picky they are when it comes to water. Too much and they sulk. Too little and they wilt. I’ve lost more strawberries to improper watering than to pests or diseases combined. That’s why I created this post—not just for you, but also to keep myself on track. 😅

Whether you’re growing Albion, Sweet Charlie, Honeoye, Eversweet, or San Andreas, getting the water just right will make the difference between juicy fruits and sad, empty pots.

🌤️ Watering Strawberries in the Rooftop Garden

Growing strawberries on a rooftop in the Philippines’ tropical climate is a unique experience. The sun can be scorching, and the rains can be relentless, sometimes brought on by a parade of typhoons from June to December.

Here’s how I handle watering depending on the season:

🌧️ During the Rainy Season (June–Dec)

Main challenge: Water-logged pots, fungal diseases, root rot.

My strategy:in Watering Strawberries:

  • Move pots away from direct rainfall using awnings or DIY UV plastic roofing

  • Water only when soil looks dry 2 inches below the surface

  • ✅ Use pots with excellent drainage holes and a layer of pebbles or coco husk

  • ✅ Avoid watering at night — leaves should dry by sunset

  • 🚫 Never let the soil stay soggy for days (hello, fungus!)

  • ✅ Use Trichoderma or cinnamon sprays occasionally to prevent root rot

☀️ During the Dry Season (Jan–May)

Main challenge: Dehydration, heat stress, small berries.

My strategy:

  • ✅ Water every 2–3 days, or daily during heatwaves

  • Water in the morning, so roots are cool before noon

  • ✅ Mulch with dried banana peels or coco husk to retain moisture

  • ✅ Use self-watering trays if you’ll be away for a day or two

  • ✅ Mix compost tea or seaweed/fish emulsion into water every 2–3 weeks for nourishment

🪴 Pot Size and Watering Strawberries Frequency

Pot SizeWatering FrequencyNotes
1-gallonDaily or every other dayDries out fast
3–5 gallonEvery 2–3 daysBetter moisture retention
7+ gallonEvery 3–4 daysIdeal for mother plants

🧪 My Secret Test for Watering Needs

I always do the finger test before watering:

  1. Stick your finger 2 inches into the soil

  2. If it feels dry—water

  3. If it feels moist—wait another day

Or use a wooden stick — poke into the soil and if it comes out clean and dry, time to water. If it’s slightly damp or has soil sticking, you can skip.

🧴 Can I Use Compost Tea or Trichoderma as Water?

Yes, you can! I often:

  • Add diluted compost juice or vermicast tea once a week

  • Sprinkle Trichoderma water lightly when transplanting or during high humidity

  • Use banana peel soak water as an occasional mild potassium boost

These natural liquids act as both hydration and nutrition — perfect for strawberries in pots!

🚫 Common Watering Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overhead watering in late afternoon: invites fungus

  • Watering every single day blindly: leads to soggy, weak roots

  • Letting soil dry out completely then soaking it: stresses plants

  • Leaving trays full of water under pots: drowns the roots!

🫶 Final Thoughts: Watering Is an Art!

Watering strawberries is not just a chore—it’s part science, part intuition, and part figberry garden magic. ✨💧🍓

Once you observe how your strawberries respond, you’ll feel more confident. Some leaves might droop after transplant, some might curl from the sun—but they bounce back when cared for gently and consistently.

Your rooftop garden can absolutely thrive with healthy, fruit-bearing strawberries when the watering rhythm is right.
And trust me—there’s nothing more satisfying than watching them flower and fruit after a perfect watering cycle. 🌼
