1. Black Madeira KK-

The Black Madeira fig is a highly sought-after fig variety known for its dark, almost black skin and red interior, and its exceptionally sweet, rich, and jam-like flavor. It’s considered by many to be one of the best-tasting figs and is referred to as the “king of fig varieties”. BM ranges from medium to large size. I love BM so much, I’m making more copies of it in my figgylicious garden.

  • Origin: Black Madeira originates from Madeira island in Portugal.
  • Discoverers: This specific strain, Black Madeira KK, was introduced to the fig-growing community by a fig enthusiast known as “KK” (the initials of a collector from California who helped propagate the variety).
  • Description: Black Madeira KK is a highly prized fig known for its delicious flavor and rare growing habits. It has a dark skin, with a rich, dark red colored interior. It’s often considered one of the super best-tasting figs in the world.

2. Italian 258-

The Italian 258 fig, often referred to as I-258, is a highly prized fig variety known for its delicious, complex taste and excellent productivity. It’s a medium to large fig with a purple exterior and deep red interior. It is well-known for its excellent production, consistently high-quality figs, and resilience to climate variations. It’s a favorite for both eating fresh and drying.

  • Origin: As the name suggests, Italian 258 is a cultivar from Italy, a region renowned for its fig varieties
  • Taste: The figs are medium to large and boast a sweet, berry-like flavor with subtle undertones of honey and spice. The flesh is amber to pink, and it has a smooth, creamy texture.

3. Col de Dame Gegantina-

CdD Gegantina, as the name implies, produces very large figs that have a wonderful sugar content and an appealing rich texture. They are often favored for their size and flavor and are used both fresh and in preserves.

4. Col de Dame Blanca Negra-

This fig has a unique appearance with a light greenish-yellow skin that ripens to a golden color. It is a very productive fig tree, especially in warm climates, and beautifully thriving in my figgylicious garden

  • Origin: CdD Blanca Negra is a variety that originates from southern Spain, particularly in the region of Andalusia.
  • Taste: The flavor is sweet with subtle floral notes and a creamy texture. The flesh is a light golden color with a hint of pink near the center.

5. Col de Dame Rimada-

The name “Rimada” refers to the fig’s striped, variegated skin, which is one of the most distinctive features of this fig. It is quite ornamental and performs well in warmer climates. Making a copy of this for my figgylicious garden.

  • Origin: Cdd Rimada is a rare fig that is also from Spain, originating in regions known for their fig diversity.
  • Taste: Rimada figs are known for their sweet, honey-like flavor, which is combined with a delicate fruity aroma. The interior is a pale amber color with a creamy texture.

6.Col de Dame Grise

The CDD Grise fig is a popular variety known for its unique flavor and appearance. It’s characterized by a greenish purple to purple skin when it ripens with small cracks on its skin. The flesh is a dense, dark red. I love this fig variety in taste and productivity and will make more copies for my figgylicious garden

  • Taste: This fig variety has a rich, sweet taste and flavorful undertones, some describes as having Bordeaux berry flavor.
  • Discoverer: The CdD fig family originates from France, but most varieties in circulation were donated from Montserrat Pons i Boscana from Mallorca, Spain.

7. Socorro Black-

Socorro Black is a dark-skinned fig, with an elongated shape and a robust sweetness that makes it ideal for fresh eating. It’s also praised for its hardiness in drier climates. I see how prolific this variety is and will definitely grow more for my figgylicious garden.

  • Origin: Socorro Black is a variety of fig native to New Mexico, named after the town of Socorro.
  • Taste: The flavor is intense and sweet, often described as very complex with notes of jammy berries and deep honey. The flesh is deep red, with a smooth and rich texture.

8. Bordissott Negra Rimada

The distinctive striped (rimada) pattern on the skin sets this fig apart. The flesh is light amber with a juicy, pleasant sweetness that makes it popular in Mediterranean cuisine. This is one among my favorite fig varieties I propagate more copies for my figgylicious garden

  • Origin: Bordissotte Negra Rimada (BnR) hails from the Mediterranean region, particularly Southern France and Spain.
  • Taste: This fig offers a rich, sweet flavor with a slight tang. It’s a large fig with a creamy, honey-like flavor that intensifies as it ripens.
  • Discoverers: Bordissotte Negra Rimada was identified and propagated by fig enthusiasts in the Mediterranean region who were passionate about fig diversity.

9. Adriatic JH-

  • Taste: The flavor is exceptional, with a balance of berry-like tartness and smooth sweetness. The flesh is raspberry-colored and has a creamy texture.

11. Belvedere-

Belvedere figs are known for their striking appearance—golden skin and rich, golden flesh. They are a great choice for eating fresh or preserving. It’s nice having this flavorful variety in my figgylicious garden  great for snacks as well like  all of my favorite varieties.

  • Origin: Belvedere originates from the southern Mediterranean region, particularly Italy.
  • Taste: It has a very sweet, honeyed flavor with mild fruity notes. The flesh is soft and golden, with a silky texture.

12. Calderona-

The fig has a round shape, resembling a small cauldron, hence the name Calderona. The skin is smooth and black, large leaves and the pulp inside is a deep red color. Calderona trees are known for being prolific producers, meaning they yield a lot of fruit. 

  • Origin: The Calderona fig originates from Mallorca, Spain, and was a favorite of fig grower Montserrat Pons.
  • Taste: Described as having a complex, syrupy, strong berry flavor, and some comparing it to Black Madeira.

13. Constantine de Algeire-
