It’s been a few days since I planted my fig tree, and I’m already seeing some small signs of growth! I’m so excited to watch it thrive, but I know that taking proper care of it is key to ensuring it’s healthy and strong. Today, I’m going to share all the things I’m doing to keep my fig tree happy and growing.

Watering
Fig trees are pretty drought-tolerant once established, but during the first few months, they need regular watering to help their roots settle in especially when they’re grown in pots. I make sure to water deeply around the base of the tree about thrice a week (more if we have a hot spell). I’m always checking to make sure the soil isn’t too dry or too soggy—balance is key.

Fertilizing
Fig trees are pretty light feeders, so they don’t need a lot of fertilizer. I added some organic compost to the soil when I planted the tree, but I plan to fertilize it again in the spring with a slow-release fertilizer to give it a bit of a boost. I’ll do this every year in the early spring before the growing season starts.

Pruning
Fig trees don’t need a lot of pruning, but it’s good to give them a trim to help them grow in a strong, healthy way. I plan to prune my tree in late July or early spring before the new growth starts. I’ll remove any dead or damaged branches, and I’ll also shape the tree to keep it balanced. This will also help with air circulation and light penetration.

Mulching and Weed Control
I’ve noticed a few weeds popping up around the base of my tree, so I’ve been careful to remove them by hand. I also added a fresh layer of organic mulch to keep moisture in and protect the roots. Figs don’t like competition from weeds, so keeping the area around your tree clean and mulched will help it thrive.

Pest Control
So far, my fig tree hasn’t had any pest issues, but I’m keeping an eye out. Figs can sometimes attract pests like aphids or spider mites. I plan to regularly check the leaves for any signs of damage and treat any problems with an organic insecticidal soap if necessary.

Conclusion
That’s all for fig tree care! By keeping up with regular watering, light pruning, and mulch, I’m confident my fig tree will stay healthy and strong.

Tomorrow, I’ll talk about fig tree pests and how to prevent them, so stay tuned if you’re worried about critters invading your garden. Check Day 5 Here!🌱
