Today’s the first day of what I’m calling my fig gardening adventure—and I’m excited to take you along with me. I’ve decided to start this blog series to document the process of growing fig trees in my garden, and I’m really hoping that sharing my experiences (the good, the bad, and the messy) will help anyone else thinking of doing the same.
Why figs, you ask? Well, it’s pretty simple. Figs are one of those fruits that feel a little magical when you grow them yourself. They’re delicious, nutritious, and have this almost tropical vibe that I love. Plus, they’re relatively low-maintenance and, once established, can thrive year after year. I was looking for a fruit tree that would be easy enough for a beginner gardener like me to handle, and figs seemed like the perfect fit.
Why I Decided to Grow Figs
I’ve always had a soft spot for figs, but I never thought about growing them until I started researching fruit trees for my terrace. I wanted something that was relatively easy to take care of, but also had a high reward-to-effort ratio—meaning I wanted to plant something that would give me a lot of fruit without demanding too much of my time or expertise.
Figs ticked all those boxes. I can’t tell you how satisfying it will be to have fresh figs growing in my own terrace, and in a pot. I mean, can you imagine? Fresh figs in the middle of summer—snacking on them straight from the tree, or maybe tossing them in a salad or baking them into something delicious. Sounds perfect to me.
The Variety I Chose
Now, I’m sure you’re wondering: What kind of figs did I pick? I started on Raspberry Latte variety, introduced by a long time friend of mine whose more experienced in growing different fig varieties. Raspberry Latte is known for its rich, sweet flavor, a bit tangy and a pretty hardy variety. I’ve read that this variety do well in my climate, hot and rainy Philippines, and honestly, I just liked the sound of the name. I also love that Raspberry latte is versatile—perfect for fresh eating, but also great for drying or making jams.
I did consider a few other varieties, but as I am new to growing figs I considered Raspberry Latte seemed like the best fit for me. Plus, they have that beautiful deep reddish purple color when they ripen, and I’ve heard they’re packed with flavor. Definitely looking forward to getting them planted!
What’s Next
Tomorrow, I’ll be talking more about choosing the right fig varieties for my own garden. I’ll go over a few of the top types of figs and why I chose the one I did, so if you’re thinking of growing figs too, you’ll get some insights.
But for now, I’m off to prepare for planting—getting my soil ready and figuring out the best spot in my garden for these new additions. Let’s see what happens! Tomorrow Check for Day2 Here! 🌱
