🌧️ Rainy Season Fig Care: 7 Proven Tips to Protect Your Trees from Rot, Ants, and Stress

by | Jun 25, 2025 | Uncategorized

🌧️ Why Rainy Season Fig Care Is Crucial For  Healthy Fig Growth

The rainy season is here! In the Philippines, fig growers like us go from blazing sun to heavy downpours almost overnight. Right after the dry season peaks in April and May, June brings in thick humidity, soggy soil, and long weeks of wetness. While the garden may look lush, too much rain can cause root rot, fungus, and stubborn ant infestations on fig trees.

But don’t worry—rainy season fig care isn’t complicated. With a little know-how and preparation, your fig trees will thrive even when the skies pour. Here are 7 proven tips to protect your precious figs this rainy season!

1. 🪴Move Potted Figs Under Cover

One of the advantages of growing figs in containers is you can move them! During rainy weeks, relocate your pots under a covered patio, terrace, or build a simple DIY tent using PVC pipes and a shade cloth.

2. 🌊 Elevate Pots for Better Drainage

Use bricks, pot risers, or plant stands to keep your pots raised above pooling water. This is essential in areas with poor drainage or daily rains. If you’re in Tagaytay or Baguio, where it rains longer, even 2-inch elevation helps a lot!

3. 🌿 Use Shade Cloth or Large Umbrella as Rain Shield

Not all rain is welcome—especially torrential downpours. A breathable 70% HDPE shade cloth allows airflow while shielding your trees from fungal-prone saturation.

You can find shade cloths like this on Amazon or Shopee. Make sure to secure it loosely with clips or zip ties for easy takedown.

4. ✂️ Prune for Airflow

Rain encourages leaf growth, but too much leaf density means no air circulation. That’s when fungus thrives. Trim overlapping or lower branches to let your fig trees breathe. Always prune on dry days to prevent open wound infections.

5. 🐜 Drive Away Ants the Natural Way

Ants love rainy season fig trees. Why? Because they farm pests like scale insects and aphids. Use petroleum jelly or tape around the trunk base, or sprinkle cinnamon to drive them off.

These are natural, kid-safe options—perfect for a sustainable fig garden. One of the best tips for rainy season fig care

6. 🍂 Watch Soil Moisture (Don’t Assume!)

Even during daily rain, it’s possible your container soil isn’t soaked. Or worse—completely waterlogged. Stick a finger two inches down or use a soil moisture meter. Overwatering is the #1 rainy season fig mistake in our tropical climate!

7. 🌱 Fungus? Use Neem or Baking Soda Spray

Use a weekly spray of 1 tbsp baking soda + 1 liter water + a dash of dish soap to prevent leaf spot and mildew. Neem oil also works great for fungus prevention.

💡 Bonus Tip: Typhoon Prep

When PAGASA announces a typhoon watch, take action:

  • Secure tall trees with ties
  • Move small pots indoors
  • Skip fertilizer applications before storms

Always check PAGASA’s weather alerts for advance warnings. A few hours of prep can save you months of fig growth!
