How I saved my ripening figs in my garden happened so fast…

Let me tell you what happened today… As I was preparing a snack (hello, chicken sandwich ๐Ÿ˜‹), the skies darkened and suddenly โ€” boom! โ€” heavy rain in the middle of hot summer, can you believe that? But it happens! So I ran as fast as I could, grabbed my fig pots one at a time, (all 14 of them!), and tucked them safely under my terrace roof. Why the rush? Because each pot has a ripening figโ€ฆ and rain can ruin them in seconds, and who would want to eat a cracked and spoiled fig? But the next day, I found one cracked fig, but good enough I have some organza bags ready. saving it from total spoil.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Why Rain is a Fig Growerโ€™s Nightmare

  • Heavy rain causes fig fruits to split or crack and spoil

  • This happens when the fruit absorbs water too quickly through the skin

  • Splits make figs prone to rot, mold, and pests โ€” especially right before harvest!

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ What I Do to Protect My Figs

  • Keep them in moveable pots โ€” easier to shelter in sudden weather

  • Use a covered area or terrace during rainy days

  • Check the weather forecast daily when figs are ripening

  • Harvest early if rain is coming and figs are close to ready

๐Ÿ’š What You Can Do Too

  • Add wheels to your fig pots for easy transport to shelter

  • Use a 5gal- 7gal pots for fast and easy lift
  • Use temporary covers like large umbrellas, clear plastic bins, or DIY rain shields

  • Pick fruit early if it’s soft, drooping, and near peak ripeness โ€” better a day early than rain-damaged!

๐ŸŒŸ Final Tip:

Figs ripen fast โ€” and rain doesnโ€™t wait. Stay ahead of the weather, and youโ€™ll enjoy more perfect, sweet figs on your plate. Always be ready to protect your fig trees from sudden rain pour.
